Summary:

Tinnitus is the perception of sound where there is no external sound source. Patients often describe the sound as buzzing, ringing, roaring or whistling, but it can also sound like music, or even chatter. Tinnitus itself is not a disease or illness but a symptom of an underlying disease or illness. Tinnitus is most common in patients with a hearing loss and is more common in men than women1. Importantly, 80% of tinnitus patients also have hearing loss1. The most common negative effects are anxiety, depression, inability to concentrate and sleep disturbances.
