Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease involving the upper and lower motor neurons that control voluntary movement. When neurons can no longer transmit impulses to the muscles, the muscles begin to atrophy, and weakness increases over time. This educational activity will provide an overview of the condition and the role of the healthcare team in management of this chronic, debilitating condition.

The goal of this continuing education module is to update nurses, dietitians, physical therapists, physicians, speech-language pathologists, and radiologic technologists on recent developments in the treatment of patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • List and discuss major signs and symptoms of ALS
  • Explain current approaches in the management of ALS
  • Discuss the roles of the interprofessional healthcare team in the care of patients with ALS
