Summary:

The course details the signs of burnout and compassion fatigue and differentiates between the two. It describes how current healthcare trends have resulted in an increase in the occurrence of burnout and compassion fatigue along with the adverse impact on healthcare delivery. Assessments to identify burnout and compassion fatigue are discussed and evidence-based interventions to help address and/or prevent burnout and compassion fatigue are presented.

Objectives:

The goal of this continuing education program is to inform healthcare professionals about the signs of burnout and compassion fatigue and to discuss evidence-based treatments for both. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Identify the signs of both burnout and compassion fatigue and differentiate between the two
  • Understand the current trends in healthcare that contribute to increases in the prevalence of burnout and compassion fatigue in the interprofessional team
  • Identify assessments that can be used to measure burnout and compassion fatigue in members of the interprofessional team
  • Identify strategies related to the team member, the clinical work, and the clinical environment that can prevent and/or mitigate the effects of burnout and compassion fatigue
