Summary:

As pediatric dysphagia has become more known to the public, the need for behavioral interventions has become more significant. This continuing education module will review behavioral aspects of pediatric dysphagia, including etiologies, a team approach to case management, types of food or liquid aversions and their effects, components of the speech-language pathologist’s evaluation of a child with behavioral dysphagia, and different options for determining goals and frequency of treatment. Through case analysis and a case vignette, readers will develop tools for evidence-based intervention strategies that target behavioral aspects of pediatric dysphagia. Follow-up processes after the evaluation or intensive feeding program will also be discussed, as well as common misconceptions about behavioral interventions. This course assumes that participants have a basic understanding of typical feeding development.

Objectives:

The goal of this continuing education module is to guide speech-language pathologists in the evaluation and treatment of children who present with behavioral dysphagia. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Identify etiologies/diagnoses associated with pediatric behavioral dysphagia
  • Complete an evaluation and formulate goals for a child with behavioral dysphagia
  • Implement behavioral strategies and techniques for working with children who have food aversions and other maladaptive behaviors surrounding foods or liquids
