Course Overview

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual-5 of the American Psychiatric Association considers nonsuicidal self-injury as a condition for further study. The manual defines NSSI as "intentional self-inflicted damage to the surface of the body of the sort likely to induce bleeding, bruising, or pain with the expectation that the injury will lead to minor or moderate physical harm." There is no suicidal intent. Self-injurious behavior can have serious consequences for the person and elicit feelings of helplessness from caregivers. This module will provide the knowledge to dispel the mystery and promote effective treatment for people who engage in self-injurious behavior. It informs healthcare professionals about the disorder, causes, assessment, and treatments.
