Summary:

A growing body of research has shown a variety of patient populations experience decreased patient safety, poorer health outcomes, and lower quality of care based on race, ethnicity, language, disability, and sexual orientation. Effective communication with all patients is crucial to providing safe care. The healthcare team should aspire to meet the unique communication, cultural, and familial needs of all patients.

Objectives:

The goal of this continuing education program is to provide nurses, dietitians, paramedics and EMTs, laboratory professionals, occupational therapists, respiratory therapists, physicians and social workers, and speech-language pathologists and audiologists with information about The Joint Commission standards related to effective communication, cultural competence, and patient- and family-centered care. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Identify the elements of effective communication, cultural competence, and patient- and family-centered care
  • State The Joint Commission standards related to effective communication, cultural competence, and patient- and family-centered care
  • List the items of best practice associated with effective communication, cultural competence, and patient- and family-centered care across the continuum of care

This course emphasized the importance of providing resources to patients that may have barriers to communication and how TJC mandates these be provided. This is in response to studies showing higher numbers of adverse events due to communication barriers
