Summary:

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that nearly 40 million adults in the U.S. smoke, and 16 million of those adults have a serious illness attributable to their smoking habit. With nearly half a million U.S. deaths yearly attributed to smoking or exposure to secondhand smoke, the CDC has identified smoking as the No.1 cause of preventable disease, disability, and death. With recent litigation and subsequent media attention on cigarettes and smoking, clinicians find themselves being called on to offer support and counseling to smokers who are trying to quit.

This course provides an overview of the need for smoking cessation, components of a successful program, the process for working as an interprofessional team, stages of readiness during the smoking cessation process, and how to help patients at each stage, including a discussion on smoking cessation aids and their benefits and risks.

Objectives:

The goal of this smoking cessation continuing education program is to help pharmacists, dietitians/nutritionists, nurses, occupational therapists, respiratory therapists, and social workers work together to create a successful plan to help patients quit smoking. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Identify the stages of readiness that patients exhibit during the process of smoking cessation
  • Describe three smoking cessation approaches or aids that healthcare providers can suggest to patients
  • Identify healthcare professionals and their roles in smoking cessation
  • List three contraindications for nicotine gum and patches
