Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is characterized by airflow limitation that is largely irreversible. Nearly 16 million people in the United States age 18 and older have been diagnosed with COPD; millions of others have COPD but have not yet been diagnosed. The airflow limitation is usually progressive and associated with an abnormal inflammatory response in the airways and lungs as a result to exposure to noxious particles or gases. The evidence-based Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) guidelines, updated in 2019, provide strategies for healthcare providers worldwide to prevent, diagnose, and manage COPD. This module provides clinicians with information about the incidence, causes, and symptoms of COPD and the latest clinical guidelines.

The goal of this course is to provide nurses and respiratory therapists with information about the incidence, causes, and symptoms of COPD. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Define COPD and identify its most common causes.
  • List the classes of medications used to treat COPD.
  • Discuss four areas in which education can benefit patients with COPD.
