Summary:

Though sometimes underused, the results of a complete blood count (CBC) can provide important information to the healthcare professional. Understanding the components of the blood test and the factors that influence each level will help thshee provider in determining if anemia is present and in identifying the type of anemia — iron deficiency anemia, vitamin B-12 deficiency anemia, or folic acid deficiency anemia. Knowledge of specific components of the CBC — hemoglobin, hematocrit, mean corpuscle volume, mean corpuscle hemoglobin, and mean corpuscle hemoglobin concentration— are necessary to identify the type of anemia present. Knowledge of the variations in CBC results and their causes will help the provider identify which additional labs, if ordered, could provide a clearer picture of the medical issues in his or her patient. This self-study module will illuminate each component of the CBC and the rationale for interpreting the results.

Objectives:

The goal of this blood count basics continuing education program is to enhance nurses’, dietitians’, dietary managers’, and respiratory therapists’ understanding of information provided in a standard complete blood count (CBC). After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Define each standard component of a CBC
  • Categorize three common anemias based on findings of the CBC
  • Describe three relationships between the components of a CBC
