Summary:

Roughly 200,000 Americans are diagnosed with abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) each year; yet most of them have no symptoms. In the United States, a ruptured AAA is the 15th leading cause of death in men and the 10th leading cause of death after the age of 55. AAAs also run in families. A person carries a 12-times greater chance of developing an AAA if a first-degree relative has experienced AAA. Clinicians in community and acute care settings should look for evidence of this health problem routinely when assessing older adult patients. Lowering the mortality from ruptured AAAs requires informed consumers who are involved in their own healthcare, as well as knowledgeable healthcare personnel to assess, teach, and guide this target group.

Objectives:

The goal of this continuing education program is to enhance nurses’, radiologic technologists’, and respiratory therapists’ ability to identify characteristic manifestations, signs of impending rupture, and treatment modalities related to an AAA. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Describe three important clinical manifestations of an AAA.
  • Recognize major signs of impending rupture of an AAA.
  • Define the process of identification, management, and treatment of an AAA.
