Summary:

According to data from the Wisconsin Sleep Cohort study, approximately 34% of men and 17% of women have obstructive sleep apnea in the United States. Four to fifty percent of adults, worldwide, have diagnosable obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and many of them remain undiagnosed. This disorder contributes to other serious medical conditions and increases the risk of stroke or death from any cause. Risk factors, diagnosis, and management of OSA will be addressed in this course.

Objectives:

The goal of this continuing education course is to update nurses’, physicians’, and respiratory therapists’ ability to identify symptoms and treatments for patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Identify at least 3 symptoms of OSA.
  • Describe risk factors for OSA.
  • List multiple treatment options for OSA.
