Summary:

Asthma is a common condition that affects people of all age categories. Currently there is no cure for asthma. However, the appropriate long-term management involving non-pharmacotherapeutic and pharmacotherapeutic treatment options can prevent acute asthma exacerbations and promote better prognosis. The National Asthma Education and Prevention Program guidelines have not been updated since 2007. Since then there have been a number of new therapies and medications approved for the management of asthma, including new inhaler delivery systems and interleukin-5 inhibitors.

Objectives:

The goal of this continuing education program is to provide pharmacists with a comprehensive review and update in asthma pharmacotherapy in the chronic setting. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Define asthma, status asthmaticus, chronic asthma, exercise-induced asthma, and work-related asthma
  • Review epidemiology and prognosis of people with asthma
  • Review etiology and risk factors of asthma
  • Identify clinical presentation of new asthma and symptoms of asthma exacerbations
  • Review pharmacotherapeutic agents and plans for acute and chronic asthma scenarios
  • Discuss important patient education and counseling points for various asthma treatments
