Course Overview

Resilience is the ability to adapt, adjust, or cope with adversity, a negative life event, or stress. Resilience is process-oriented rather than a personality trait. Protective factors are multidimensional and include social, cognitive, and biological elements that help individuals cope better. Skills in resilience can be taught to clients to help them better cope with adversity and improve overall well-being. Several approaches — including cognitive behavioral therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, positive psychology interventions, mindfulness approaches, and problem-solving therapy — are evidence-based and shown to be effective in increasing skills in resilience and having a positive effect on well-being. Clinicians in behavioral healthcare settings are also prone to additional stress given the nature of their jobs. Self-care strategies can support practitioners’ resilience and help them avoid burnout and stress.
