"Metabolic syndrome" includes insulin resistance, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and obesity, and is a risk factor for diabetes and CVD. This course defines clinical assessment, and summarizes current thinking about causation and consequences. Topics include: dietary, behavioral and drug therapy for adults and children.
The goal of this program is to take an in-depth look at all aspects of metabolic syndrome, from the physiology and diagnosis to treatment and strategies for successfully management. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
- Define metabolic syndrome and its associated cluster of symptoms
- Explain the diagnostic criteria for metabolic syndrome
- Describe the role of carbohydrate in the development of symptoms of metabolic syndrome
- Describe how a low-fat diet exacerbates the heart disease risk in metabolic syndrome
- Explain how obesity contributes to metabolic syndrome
- Explain how changes in the United States dietary intake have contributed to obesity and metabolic syndrome
- Define the glycemic index and glycemic load of foods and explain how this concept is applied to dietary control of metabolic syndrome
- Plan two days of meals using the basic components of protein, fat, and carbohydrate in the ideal diet for metabolic syndrome
- Explain the role of physical activity in improving insulin sensitivity
- List two harmful affects each for smoking and alcohol in metabolic syndrome
- List four types of pharmaceutical agents that may be prescribed for metabolic syndrome
- Discuss three concerns in children developing metabolic syndrome
