This course explains how cardiovascular drugs impact health status and appetite. A thorough review of drugs used for right- and left-side heart failure is presented, with a section on anticoagulant drugs and their use with nutrition support and supplements.



Upon successful completion of this course the student will be able to:

  1. Understand the mechanisms of left and right heart failure.
  2. Know role of digoxin in treatment of heart failure and effects on nutrition and health status.
  3. Identify drugs and drug doses that are not recommended for treatment of heart disease.
  4. Consider the use of various different drugs used for right versus left heart failure and effects on nutrition and health status.
  5. Distinguish among ACE inhibitors, diuretics, calcium channel blockers, nitrates and other drugs used to treat heart disease.
  6. Identify the nutrition effects of anticoagulant drugs

I liked the way it was organized. Would love a summary at the end of each chapter, because at times the material had detail, descriptions of studies, that distracted (but were important to know about) from the flow of information

Material was vague in places - questions were surprising. For example, no where in the information did it tell the 1/2 life of digoxin! Yet, there was a question about it. Also page 15 and 22 indicates digoxin ACTIVATES calcium, question 10 wants all of the above, but one choice is INHIBITS calcium ions.
