Today’s Amish community is thriving, with a population that has more than doubled in the past 20 years to 308,000 and is expected to continue to grow. Amish acceptance of modern medicine varies widely. Some Amish people have a family physician or nurse practitioner and regularly seek standard medical treatment, while other families avoid seeking help from the medical establishment unless the situation is dire. This module provides nurses and dietitians with an overview of specific values of the Amish culture to allow them to develop trusting relationships when Amish patients choose to seek professional help outside of their community. The information in this article will help healthcare providers provide culturally sensitive care to Amish patients and other members of the Plain community.

The goal of this health continuing education module is to provide nurses and dietitians with an overview of the values of the Amish culture to allow them to develop trusting relationships with Amish patients who choose to seek professional help outside their community. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Describe three cultural values that influence Amish health
  • Name two common health practices the Amish communities use
  • Explain three strategies to provide culturally sensitive care for Amish patients and families
