Sjögren’s syndrome is a systemic chronic inflammatory disorder that usually affects exocrine organs. The majority of individuals with primary Sjögren’s syndrome present with sicca symptoms that include dry eyes, dry mouth and parotid gland enlargement. Treatment of Sjögren’s syndrome is symptomatic and patient satisfaction remains poor. A small but significant portion of patients with gland enlargement will develop lymphoma; early diagnosis and detection is key. The prognosis for patients with Sjögren’s syndrome depends on the number of organ systems involved.

The goal of this program is to inform pharmacists, dietitians, health educators, laboratory professionals and physicians about Sjögren’s syndrome. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Briefly describe the pathophysiology of Sjögren’s syndrome
  • Identify organ systems that may be affected and signs and symptoms that will manifest as a result
  • Describe treatment strategies for symptomatic relief of Sjögren’s syndrome
