Certain conditions and diagnoses common to children often signal a need for a tracheostomy tube. To care for a child with a tracheostomy tube, healthcare professionals must understand the reason the child needs a tracheostomy tube, the functional status of the child’s upper airway and the child’s medical condition. Diagnoses include structural airway abnormalities, certain neuromuscular diseases, impairments of the diaphragm muscle and chronic lung disease. This module provides information on the management of pediatric tracheostomies and emergencies associated with them for home care nurses and dietitians.
The goal of this tracheostomy management continuing education program is to discuss the management of pediatric tracheostomies and emergencies associated with them for home care nurses and dietitians. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
- Explain why a child may require a tracheostomy
- Describe routine tracheostomy management and emergency preparation and prevention in the home
- Describe a step-wise approach to tracheostomy emergency response in the home
