People with diabetes have a tremendous risk for developing a foot ulcer, which is the precursor to most amputations. The lifetime risk can reach 25%. People with poorly controlled diabetes are more likely to experience foot complications. Seemingly minor foot complications can have devastating consequences for people with diabetes. Any change in the sensation, shape or skin integrity of the feet can contribute to deformity, infection, ulceration and, ultimately, amputation. Prevention, early detection and aggressive treatment of complications are crucial. Education is key in preventing diabetic foot complications. Healthcare providers need to emphasize careful control of diabetes, daily foot examination beginning at the time of diabetes diagnosis and proper foot care. This course describes risk factors, such as neuropathy, poorly fitting shoes, infections and Charcot’s joint. It also discusses treatment and prevention strategies.
The goal of this diabetic foot injury continuing education program is to provide nurses, dietitians, dietary managers, and health educators with an overview of the incidence, contributing factors, treatment strategies and interventions for diabetic feet. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
