Diverticular disease includes asymptomatic diverticulosis, as well as the more serious diverticulitis. Diagnosis is often difficult due to common and vague symptoms. Serious and potentially life-threatening problems begin when infection develops. Preferred treatments range from antibiotics to bowel rest, dietary modifications and, in the most severe cases, surgery. Diverticular disease impairs the digestive process and not only alters nutritional status, but overall health as well. In the past decade, there has been a significant change in consensus regarding treatment for diverticular disease including nutritional recommendations focused on fiber intake. The healthcare professional needs to understand the different severities of diverticular disease and the appropriate treatment including medical interventions and diet therapy.

The purpose of this continuing education activity is to provide healthcare professionals with information about the prevalence and causes of diverticular disease, as well as the symptoms of diverticulitis, diagnosis and treatment of common complications, and nursing and nutrition implications for patients with the disorder. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Identify the risk factors for diverticulosis.
  • Describe 3 symptoms of diverticulitis.
  • Identify at least 2 potential complications of diverticulitis.
  • List the dietary recommendations for patients with diverticular disease.
