The most important controllable factors in pregnancy outcomes are prenatal medical care and adequate nutrition during pregnancy. The health and eating habits of the mother directly affect the fetus and the pregnancy’s outcome. In a country such as the United States where the food supply is plentiful, women should be well nourished. It’s disheartening to realize that malnutrition and poor eating habits still lead to maternal, fetal, and neonatal complications. Not only are there short-term complications for maternal health, but the child may experience chronic diseases later in life based on the mother’s prenatal diet and its impact on the mother and the baby’s epigenetics. Learn what nutrients are necessary for a healthy pregnancy and why nutrition should be a focus for preconception and prenatal care.

The goal of this pregnancy outcome and nutritional status module is to provide dietitians, health educators and nurses with information about factors that may affect pregnancy outcomes. After studying the material presented here, you will be able to:
  • Identify at least five risk factors for poor pregnancy outcomes.
  • Discuss how nutrition affects pregnancy outcomes.
  • Explain epigenetics and how nutrition status may influence it.
