Gestational diabetes mellitus can impact both the short- and long-term health of pregnant women and their developing babies significantly. Medical nutrition therapy is key in managing this condition. Optimizing nutrition and controlling blood glucose levels can have positive effects on the physical and mental health of pregnant women. Because dietetics practitioners play a key role in the management of gestational diabetes, it is essential that they have a solid understanding of the physiology, diagnosis and nutritional management of gestational diabetes.
The goal of this gestational diabetes mellitus continuing education module is to provide dietetics practitioners with the basic guidelines for the diagnosis and management of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) so they can evaluate and counsel their patients. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
- List risk factors for developing GDM
- Name lab tests and interpret blood glucose values to guide diagnosis and management of GDM
- Develop nutrition care plans based on nutrition recommendations for GDM
