Hepatitis A is a common liver illness in the U.S. Since its recognition in the 1970s, the actual number of cases has declined in most western countries. This has been chiefly due to improved hygiene, better public health polices and greatly improved sanitation facilities. However, people who plan to travel to endemic areas as well as people with certain occupations or lifestyles who are at high risk for this infection should undergo vaccination against the virus.
The goal of this continuing education program is to provide pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, dietitians, health educators and laboratory technologists with adequate information about hepatitis A, its epidemiology, how it presents and its management. After studying the material presented here, you will be able to:
- Discuss hepatitis A and its changing epidemiology
- Describe the clinical presentation of hepatitis A infection and identify populations at risk
- Describe management of hepatitis A infection and the role of vaccination
