Nearly 30 years ago, the world effectively went global. First, there was mass migration of people because of easy air travel. This was soon followed by globalization of the economy. Now healthcare is following the same trend. The rising cost of healthcare insurance has meant that many families only have the most basic coverage. Patients from all walks of life are now going abroad for surgery to countries and regions such as India, the Middle East, Romania, South Africa and many Central and South American countries. Healthcare today is a global phenomenon that brings in billions of dollars.
The goal of this medical tourism continuing education program is to provide pharmacists, dietitians, paramedics and EMTs, health educators, occupational therapists and physicians with information about medical tourism and its pros and cons. After completing this activity, you will be better able to:
- Review the dilemmas facing American consumers who seek better healthcare.
- Describe how India and other Asian countries have tried to attract American patients.
- List the disadvantages of going abroad for medical care.
