Heart failure affects around 5.1 million people in the United States, with 670,000 people diagnosed each year. More than 250,000 people die annually of heart failure; this is twice as high as the death rate from this same condition back in 1979. B-type natriuretic peptide assay is a tool in heart failure diagnosis and management. This blood test measures the amount of circulating BNP, a cardiac neurohormone secreted from the ventricle in response to heart failure. It’s beneficial in differentiating the cause of dyspnea and monitoring the effects of diuretic therapy. Healthcare professionals as a team caring for patients with heart failure should be knowledgeable about the BNP assay, normal and abnormal values and the pharmacological management of heart failure, and should fine-tune their history-taking and physical assessment skills to provide optimum evidence-based care.
The goal of this program is to provide nurses, dietitians, dietary managers, physical therapists, EMTs and paramedics with information about the incidence, etiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis and pharmacological management of heart failure, including the use of B-type natriuretic peptide assay levels. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
- Describe the pathophysiology of heart failure
- Discuss the use of BNP assay levels in the management of heart failure
- Discuss the main classes of medications used in the management of heart failure
