Summary:

Unless immediate action is taken, the epidemic of type 2 diabetes in youth promises to be costly in terms of early health complications and healthcare expenditures. Diabetes is one of the most common chronic diseases in the U.S. among children, and an estimated 215,000 people younger than age 20 in the U.S. have either type 1 or type 2 diabetes, according to the American Diabetes Association. The ADA recommends screening children every three years, starting at age 10 or at onset of puberty, if they are overweight and have two or more high-risk criteria. Comorbidities include hypertension, dyslipidemia, and depression. Lifestyle changes to incorporate more exercise and include healthy food choices are necessary to combat this epidemic. This module provides healthcare providers with the latest information on preventing, detecting, educating, and treating youth with type 2 diabetes.

Objectives:

The goal of this diabetes continuing education program is to provide nurses, dietitians, dietary managers, and health educators with the latest information on preventing, detecting, educating, and treating youth with type 2 diabetes. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Describe three risk factors of getting type 2 diabetes in youth
  • Describe three clinical indicators of type 2 diabetes
  • Discuss two lifestyle interventions that can improve hyperglycemia associated with type 2 diabetes
