Summary:

Unless immediate action is taken, the epidemic of type 2 diabetes in youth promises to be costly in terms of early health complications and healthcare expenditures. Diabetes is one of the most common chronic diseases in the U.S. among children, and an estimated 132,000 children and adolescents younger than age 18 years (0.18% of the total United States population younger than age 18 years) have type 1 or type 2 diabetes, according to the CDC’s National Diabetes Statistics Report for 2017. The American Diabetes Association recommends screening children every three years, starting at age 10 or at onset of puberty, if they are overweight and have two or more high-risk criteria. Lifestyle changes to incorporate more exercise and include healthy food choices are necessary to combat this epidemic. This module provides healthcare providers with the latest information on preventing, detecting, educating, and treating youth with type 2 diabetes.

Objectives:

The goal of this continuing education course is to provide nurses, dietitians, dietary managers, and health educators with the latest information on preventing, detecting, educating, and treating youth with type 2 diabetes. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Describe three risk factors for developing type 2 diabetes in youth.
  • Describe three clinical indicators of type 2 diabetes.
  • Discuss two lifestyle interventions that can improve hyperglycemia associated with type 2 diabetes.
