Summary:

Recommendations for introducing solid foods to infants frequently change. Many accepted practices, such as offering rice cereal as a first food or a delayed introduction of foods that are common allergens, are based on tradition rather than evidence. New research challenges accepted practices, but healthcare providers are often slow to adopt changes to traditional practices. Increasing rates of obesity and food allergies may be related to early infant feeding practices, underscoring the importance of providing evidence-based recommendations concerning the introduction of solid foods to infants.

Objectives:

The goal of this pediatric solid foods continuing education program is to update healthcare professionals’ knowledge of basic nutrition and the introduction of solid foods to the well infant. After studying the information presented, you will be able to:
  • List the developmental cues that signal an infant’s readiness to start solid foods
  • Discuss key nutrients in the diets of infants
  • Offer reasonable advice to parents and caregivers who are concerned about the introduction of solid foods to their infants
