Summary:

Mercury poisoning still threatens people’s health and lives, and healthcare providers across various disciplines have much to learn about potential sources of poisoning, prevention, and assessment. In the general population, the presence of mercury in the food chain is still the most significant pathway for mercury exposure throughout the U.S. and the entire world. There is no known treatment to reverse the damage caused by this heavy metal element, found in liquid, solid, and vapor forms, making prevention an important public-health goal.

Objectives:

The goal of this continuing education module is to inform nurses, dietitians, health educators, laboratory professionals, and pharmacists about the threat of mercury poisoning in humans in the U.S. and around the world. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Describe the properties of mercury, particularly in its most lethal form
  • List three questions to assess for exposure to mercury and three prevention strategies
  • List at least five signs and symptoms of methyl mercury poisoning

Would like to have learned about which fish are safe to consume. For example, does farm raised fish have less mercury than wild fish in general.
