Summary:

In recent years, research and clinical practice have demonstrated that complex inter-relationships exist between hyperglycemia, dyslipidemia, insulin resistance, obesity, and hypertension. A consensus has emerged within the medical field to identify this constellation of symptoms as metabolic syndrome. This program will update healthcare providers’ understanding of metabolic syndrome and its implications in the prevention, diagnosis, and management of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Objectives:

The goal of this continuing education program is to update healthcare professionals’ understanding of metabolic syndrome and its implications in the prevention, diagnosis, and management of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Define metabolic syndrome as it relates to insulin’s normal mechanism of action
  • Discuss the relationship of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease in metabolic syndrome
  • Discuss current and future practice guidelines used in the prevention and management of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease as they relate to insulin resistance/metabolic syndrome
