Summary:

HIV/AIDS continues to affect people worldwide. Nutrition’s role in HIV/AIDS continues to evolve as the medical treatment progresses and changes, especially in light of the new medications that have made HIV/AIDS a chronic disease. The importance of vitamin and mineral supplementation and adequate nutrition status to maintain immunity in relation to the HIV virus is explained. Components of nutrition assessments and interventions to improve outcomes in patients with HIV/AIDS are described, including nutrition management of HIV/AIDS as a chronic disease.

Objectives:

The goal of this continuing education program is to inform healthcare providers about the relationship between HIV/AIDS and nutrition in order to develop best practices, recommendations and nutrition education to better meet the nutritional needs of patients with HIV/AIDS. After studying the material presented here, you will be able to:
  • Compare the differences of a healthy immune system with an immune system damaged by HIV, including the relationship of the immune system, free radicals, HIV virus and antioxidant nutrients
  • Identify the necessary components of a nutrition assessment for patients with HIV/AIDS, including estimated energy and protein needs, biochemical parameters, and medications with their side effects
  • Determine appropriate nutrition interventions for a patient with HIV/AIDS, including pregnant women, to minimize side effects of antiretroviral therapy and to maximize immune function
