The increasing prevalence of childhood obesity is a major public health concern in the U.S. today. Approximately 31% of U.S. children are overweight or obese. Obese children are more likely to become obese adults, and they have an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, coronary heart disease, gallbladder disease, respiratory disease, certain cancers, and gout. Many factors play a role in the development of childhood obesity, including poor eating habits and decreased physical activity. Registered dietitians and RNs play an important role in the treatment of pediatric overweight and obesity by providing nutrition assessment, education, monitoring and referral to other healthcare providers.

The goal of this program is to update nurses’, dietitians’, athletic trainers’, dietary managers’, school nutritionists’, fitness professionals’ and health educators’ knowledge of basic nutrition and fitness for the overweight or obese well child. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Discuss the problem of pediatric obesity in the U.S and its negative consequences
  • Describe factors that play a role in the development of childhood obesity
  • List practical solutions for parents of overweight children
