Obese children and adolescents frequently experience bullying, low self-esteem, and depression. With one out of every five American children being obese, the imperative to address obesity as early as possible is great. Left untreated, obese children are likely to become obese adults with increased risk of developing debilitating and life-threatening diseases. Medical conditions, such as type 2 diabetes or fatty liver, were previously only seen in adults and are now becoming commonplace in children. The emotional costs can be as devastating as the health implications. The etiology of pediatric obesity is multifactorial; treatment needs to consider poor eating habits and inactivity, as well as genetic, metabolic, societal and environmental factors. Through nutrition intervention and collaboration with family members, the community, and other healthcare practitioners can improve the emotional and physical health of the child with obesity significantly.

The goal of this obesity continuing education program is to update nurses’, dietitians’, athletic trainers’, dietary managers’, school nutritionists’, fitness professionals’ and health educators’ knowledge of basic nutrition and fitness for the overweight or obese well child. After studying the information here, you will be able to:
  • Identify the extent of the problem of pediatric obesity in the United States
  • Describe factors that play a role in the development of childhood obesity
  • Identify the emotional and medical risks of pediatric obesity
  • Describe evidence-based intervention strategies

Very helpful, especially appreciated steps of intervention to follow as well as specifically how it talked aout if a child needs to eat a certain food to be able to eat a highly preferred food, that they often cease to like that food
