Surgery is never the first choice for weight loss and should only be selected as an option once conservative methods have failed. The most common bariatric procedures used in North America are gastric bypass, gastric sleeve and gastric banding. With surgery, either the amount of food a person can eat at one time is restricted or food absorption is altered. Because those who have surgery ingest fewer calories than normal, they must follow a special postoperative diet to ensure adequate nutrient intake. Weight-loss medications are only for short-term use and have the potential to cause adverse effects. Surgery or medications are not a cure all; they must be used in combination with lifestyle changes, including diet and exercise, to achieve success.

The goal of this surgical and medical weight-loss continuing education module is to provide dietitians with adequate information on the different types of surgical procedures and pharmaceutical drugs to help with weight loss. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • List the different types of surgical weight-loss procedures, and their benefits and risks
  • Educate clients on the nutritional risks and diet therapy following bariatric surgery and healthy weight-loss behaviors
  • Discuss the different types of weight-loss drugs and how they are used

The course gives a solid review of each bariatric procedure, and also reviews the affects and guidelines for weight loss medications, which is very helpful. The sample formatting for support group sessions is also very good.
