Summary:

Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, an autoimmune disorder, results in destruction of the thyroid gland and symptoms of hypothyroidism, and is about 10 times more common in women than men and usually occurs between ages 40 to 60. It is characterized by the presence of lymphocytes in the thyroid gland and a positive test for antibodies to thyroperoxidase and thyroglobulin. Once patients progress to overt hypothyroidism, treatment must be initiated with levothyroxine to restore hormone levels. Levothyroxine has a narrow therapeutic-to-toxic window and must be monitored accordingly. Undertreatment can result in complications including bradycardia, constipation, coronary artery disease, anemia, and infertility. However, overtreatment can result in cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, and atrial fibrillation. This highlights the integral role that healthcare professionals have in the proper management and treatment.

Objectives:

The goal of this continuing education module is to provide healthcare professionals with information about the epidemiology, etiology, presentation, identification, and treatment of Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Discuss the pathogenesis of Hashimoto’s thyroiditis
  • Recognize different variants of Hashimoto’s thyroiditis
  • Understand proper treatment strategies for Hashimoto’s thyroiditis
  • Identify proper monitoring techniques for effective levothyroxine treatment
