The World Tourism Organization reports that more than 1 billion international journeys were taken in 2011, with 1.6 billion predicted annually by 2020. Travel on this scale puts people at risk for infectious diseases they would not usually encounter. Taking precautions before, during, and after travel can minimize many of these risks. Healthcare providers in all types of outpatient settings are in key positions to help patients assess risk associated with travel and ensure their health abroad.
The goal of this continuing education program is to enhance nurses’, physicians’, dietitians’, and health educators’ ability to advise patients who are planning international travel. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
- Identify two immunizations most often administered to international travelers
- List three preventive measures for common travel-related problems and illnesses
- List two resources to aid the international traveler seeking pretravel advice or medical assistance abroad
