Recommendations for prevention of food allergies have changed since 2008 and are still evolving. Treatment has become even more individualized, dependent on the patient and the allergen. Changes in practice have occurred, while complex clinical presentation, including multiple food allergies and eosinophilic esophagitis, has become more common. There is considerable variation in clinical practice and significant confusion among healthcare consumers as to the best treatment for food allergies. Dietitians need to learn new approaches to treat food allergies and stay current on developing trends in prevention and treatment of food allergies and related disorders.

The goal of this pediatric food allergy continuing education program is to educate healthcare professionals about the most current guidelines for treating food allergies to improve clinical practice. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Explain the difference between a food allergy and a food intolerance
  • Recognize various symptoms of food allergies, the tests most likely to reveal them, and eight common allergy tests that should not be relied upon for diagnosis
  • Explain the recommendations for introduction of complementary foods
  • Identify resources for consensus guidelines for treating food allergies
