In the last seven years, advancements in genetics research technology, namely the advent of next-generation DNA sequencing, have allowed scientists to analyze genes with greater speed than ever before. Data that used to take months or years to generate can now be generated in days. The result is an astonishing amount of genetic information and discovery regarding the variation and function of human genes. With these new findings have come new fields of study, including nutrigenetics. Scientists are taking an unprecedented interest in the effects of genes on nutrition, prompting the healthcare community to consider a more personalized approach to nutrition. Consumers, through their physicians, have access to nutrition-specific genetic testing to have diet-related genetic markers analyzed.
The goal of this nutrigenetics continuing education module is to introduce relevant genetic concepts and explore how genes can affect nutrient processing, metabolism and eating behavior. After studying the information presented here the learner will be able to:
- Explain the basic concepts of human genetics
- Discuss the types of data emerging from the field of nutrigenetics
- Explain the ways in which our genes can affect our metabolism and food intake
