How much vitamin D do we need to maintain health? This is not an easy question because a debate exists in the scientific community about the recommended daily intake. Not long ago, vitamin D was primarily viewed as a nutrient needed for bone health. In recent years, countless studies have suggested it plays a role in a multitude of other chronic conditions, such as cancer and cardiovascular and autoimmune disease. In addition, a growing number of people have been identified as vitamin D deficient. This program presents the latest evidence for intake levels higher than the Dietary Reference Intake, risk factors for a vitamin D deficiency and ways to treat a deficiency with supplementation.

The goal of this program is to provide dietitians, fitness professionals and health educators guidelines for improving vitamin D status of their patients. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Identify population groups at greatest risk for vitamin D deficiency and list factors that affect vitamin D status
  • Recommend dietary and lifestyle strategies to help specific populations meet their vitamin D needs
  • Describe research-based evidence for vitamin D’s potential role in preventing or ameliorating chronic disease
