Summary:

The number of people with diabetic kidney disease is rising quickly. Many of these people are being seen and educated by a general practice clinical dietitian, who may or may not be aware of the evidence-based recommendations for medical nutrition therapy treatment of DKD patients. This module presents the dietitian with evidence-based treatments and dietary goals for DKD.

Objectives:

The goal of this program is to teach RDNs what they need to know about diabetic kidney disease so they help their clients manage their disease. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • List at least three goals for medical nutrition therapy for patients with diabetes and chronic kidney disease
  • Explain why hypoglycemia, hyperkalemia, hyperphosphatemia, and hyperparathyroidism may become more problematic with diabetic kidney disease progression
  • Discuss the rationale for the recommendations for dietary protein, potassium, and phosphorus in CKD stages 3 and 4
