Resveratrol, a compound abundant in red wine and present in other foods, is believed to have unique anti-aging properties. But to what extent? This compound is at the forefront of research for preventing a variety of chronic conditions, such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s disease. But does it work? This course examines the current research about the anti-aging effects of red wine, the “French paradox” and other potential disease-preventive strategies. The amounts of resveratrol in wine, foods and supplements are discussed, including important factors that impact its effectiveness and bioavailability.
The goal of this continuing education module is to explore resveratrol’s potential role in promoting longevity, prevent specific chronic diseases and develop pharmaceuticals to treat chronic diseases. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
- Explain the current literature’s proposed characteristics and mechanisms of action of resveratrol and identify major food sources
- Apply current food-based resveratrol recommendations to clinical practice
- Discuss the pros and cons of using resveratrol supplements for anti-aging and chronic-disease prevention
