Most healthcare professionals are at a loss to explain why some patients compliant with dietary advice continue to have elevated blood glucoses, blood pressures and/or cholesterol levels. The reason may lie in our genetic makeup and how our genes affect our vulnerability to diseases. This course explores our current knowledge about one such gene: the APO-E gene. This gene has three genetic variants: APO-E2, APO-E3 and APO-E4. Each variant affects our lipids differently, but all are responsive to the correct dietary recommendations. By knowing which genetic variant is dominant for a given client, dietetics practitioners can personalize dietary recommendations to provide protection against cardiovascular disease.
After completing this continuing education activity, nutrition professionals should be better able to:
- Assess the differences between a gene, polymorphism, allele, and protein isoforms
- Educate patients about the role of the APOE gene in cholesterol metabolism
- Evaluate the general effects of total dietary fat and alcohol intake on LDL cholesterol in relation to apo E2, E3, and E4 isoforms
- Provide evidence-based dietary recommendations for patients according to their APOE genotype
- Examine the additional challenges special populations face when following dietary recommendations for their APOE polymorphisms
