Substance abuse is a major issue in the U.S. with 23.1 million people needing treatment for an illicit drug or alcohol problem. All dietitians, whether they work specifically with a substance treatment program, will encounter clients with substance abuse issues. It is important to know how to screen for substance abuse, how to incorporate effective counseling skills in treatment and which specific issues may be of importance when dealing with substance abuse.
The goal of this substance abuse and nutrition continuing education module is to provide dietitians with the knowledge and skill set to provide effective care to clients with substance abuse issues. After completing this continuing education activity, participants should be better able to:
- Name tools available to screen for alcohol and substance abuse
- Explain the importance of maintaining a regular meal schedule and normal blood sugar for clients in recovery in relation to the HALT principle
- Incorporate motivational interviewing and the nutrition care process in treating clients with substance abuse
