All registered dietitian nutritionists (RDNs), whether they work specifically with a substance treatment program or any type of multipopulation clinical/outpatient setting, will encounter clients with substance abuse challenges, since substance abuse is a major issue in the U.S. Approximately 15.7 million Americans meet the diagnostic criteria for alcohol use disorder (AUD), and 49.5% report using illicit drugs in their lifetime. Providing high-quality nutrition services involves understanding the physiology of substance abuse and how diet can assist in recovery. Using the Nutrition Care Process (NCP) for screening, assessing, providing education and counseling, and initiating appropriate interventions that are monitored and evaluated for effectiveness will improve patient outcomes.

The goal of this continuing education module is to provide dietitians with the knowledge and skill set to provide effective care to clients with substance abuse issues. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Name tools available to screen for alcohol and substance abuse
  • List guidelines for eating during the recovery process
  • Select appropriate educational topics to present to clients based on the total diet approach
  • Apply motivational interviewing and the Nutrition Care Process in treating clients with substance abuse issues

I was assigned this through work as an RN. I did not find this RN geared, but dietician geared which is a totally different discipline so I am not sure how beneficial it will be to me
