The public demands safety and excellence in healthcare. Our lives and those of others are too important to leave to chance. The Joint Commission is an independent, non-governmental, not-for-profit organization that accredits hospitals and healthcare organizations. A TJC survey is a chance to prove how well we do our jobs. This course explains how TJC surveyors think, what they want, and why you should prepare — not worry. Organized like the TJC Manual, it translates survey standards and functions into plain English. Cases, anecdotes, observations, and some humor make this course worth its price in peace of mind.
The goal of this course is to prepare dietitians and administrators for a hospital survey by The Joint Commission. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
- Explain the purpose of a TJC survey and accreditation
- Describe the purpose, structure and use of the Comprehensive Accreditation Manual for Hospitals (CAMH), standards and scoring
- Discuss what happens during a typical hospital survey
- Summarize the key elements of a successful survey
- Interpret the TJC quality functions and discuss how they are to be implemented
- Explore the key requirements of National Patient Safety Goals, patient-focused functions, organization-focused functions and performance improvement
