In 1987, Congress established the standards that nursing facilities must meet to obtain reimbursement under federal and state Medicaid programs. Frequent surveys ensure that residents maintain the highest possible physical, mental, and psychological well-being.  Helping residents maintain adequate nutritional status can be challenging in this highly regulated healthcare environment.  This course outlines the importance of the completion of the Resident Assessment Instrument, not just for clinical outcome measurement, but also for cost and reimbursement.  Timely screening and assessment of nutrition parameters is essential to ensure judicious interventions and care plan development.  Additional topics include the discussion of quality assessment and assurance, investigational protocols for nutrition, pressure ulcers, feeding assistants, and hydration; as well as special considerations in the care of the terminally ill resident.

The goal of this course is to increase nutrition care provider competency to assess and address nutrition problems identified in older adults residing in long-term and extended care facilities.
After studying the information presented here, participants will be able to:
  • Explain how the Minimum Data Set influences nutrition care planning.
  • Describe the relationship between the MDS and payment and reimbursement system in long-term and extended care facilities.
  • Identify how quality indicators relate to the survey process and the nursing facilities quality assurance program.
  • Use the medical record as a resource to develop individualized care plans.
  • Evaluate a process for identifying unplanned weight loss.
  • Identify factors related to the use of tube feeding for the terminally ill and potential alternatives.
Course content may take a few minutes to display fully.
