As a pregnant woman’s body changes, so do her nutritional needs. With early prenatal care and nutrition support, most women can expect a good pregnancy outcome. Timely assessment of a woman’s nutritional status can help ensure appropriate weight gain throughout her pregnancy and reduce risk factors for diet-related complications. Many nutritional risk factors for poor maternal and fetal outcomes can be addressed with early intervention involving simple lifestyle changes, such as adding specific types of foods to the diet or eliminating others. While broad nutritional guidelines are available to pregnant women from a variety of professional sources, compliance with a healthy diet is most likely ensured when a woman follows her own individualized meal plans that are balanced out with foods she will actually eat. A dietitian can work with pregnant clients to come up with feasible solutions for just about any nutrition issue.
The goal of this pregnancy and nutrition continuing education module is to teach healthcare professionals how to improve pregnancy outcomes by instructing pregnant women on proper weight gain and diet during pregnancy. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
- Recognize risk factors associated with poor pregnancy outcome.
- Discuss the effect of the nutritional status of pregnant women on pregnancy outcome.
- List three factors that influence the nutritional status of a pregnant woman.
- Discuss the relationship of fetal development to nutrient requirements, by trimester.
- Identify the proper weight gain for the pregnant woman who, at conception, is a normal weight, underweight or overweight.
- Plot the weight gain of a pregnant woman on a prenatal weight gain grid.
- List the current intake recommendations during pregnancy for calories, protein, sodium, iron, folic acid, zinc and calcium.
- Determine a plan of nutrient supplementation for a pregnant woman who, prior to pregnancy, is well nourished, poorly nourished or anemic.
- Analyze the diet of a pregnant woman, using a food frequency form, to determine if it meets the dietary recommendations for pregnancy.
- Recommend three solutions for the common complaints of pregnancy: nausea, vomiting, heartburn and constipation.
- Design a diet for a woman with gestational diabetes that has the appropriate number and distribution of calories.
- Explain the current treatment for preeclampsia and its rationale.
- Explain the effects of maternal cigarette smoking on the fetus and pregnancy outcome.
- Identify safe levels of consumption of caffeine and alcohol for the pregnant woman.
- Discuss the roles of omega-3 fatty acids in fetal development and pregnancy outcome, and list four sources in the diet.
