Includes handouts, worksheets.

Upon successful completion of this course the student will be able to:

  2. Explain the differences between nutrition education and nutrition counseling and determine whether education, counseling or both are appropriate for a client.
  3. Differentiate between insight oriented and action oriented counseling theories.
  4. Outline the stages of change and the barriers that prevent their application by adolescents and young adults.
  5. Identify at risk nutrients in adolescents and young adults and outline strategies to address potential nutrient intake problems.
  6. Name the criteria for anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and disordered eating.
  7. Review assessment and care plans for clients with anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa or disordered eating.
  8. Name at least five factors that may contribute to impaired intake in the pregnant adolescent or young adult.
  9. Discuss the concepts of adequate energy, appropriate body composition and balanced nutrient intake for adolescents and young adult athletes.
  10. Outline the nutrient and social issues that surround newly independent adolescents and young adults.
  11. Discuss the tools available to screen for alcohol abuse and eating disorders.
  12. Explain the appeal of fad diets and review a counseling approach that helps the counselor respond positively to the latest fad diet.

I appreciated the concrete information, I did not care for the case studies.

Test took WAY too much time to find correct answers even after reading material fairly thouroughly. Take LOTS of notes of what topic is on what page to help you refer back and forth for quiz. Overall, took me about 7 hrs to do start to finish.

Overall a good course, other than the outdated ED information. The counseling information was the most useful. I am not sure I learned anything new but it was a good refresher and helpful in opening my mind to adjusting some techniques for working with adolesents.
