Managing clinical nutrition services is tricky. Excellent patient care must be provided — many times on a shoestring or with fewer resources than needed. Budgets can be picked apart by administrators, and clinical dietitians feel that they have an inadequate amount of time to care for patients. Learning how to develop a budget, manage fiscal resources and find new sources of income are critical skills to be a successful manager in today’s fiscal environment. This course will look at budget preparation and income generation, including fee-for-service programs, cost-benefit analysis and cost-effective analysis, to help dietitians become successful clinical nutrition managers. Forms are provided to assist with budget planning.
The goal of this continuing education program is to teach nutrition professionals the basics of managing financial resources, budgeting, increasing income and other financial management processes. After studying the material presented here, you will be able to:
- Explain basic budgeting and financing terminology
- Explain two types of budgets that healthcare managers typically use to allocate resources appropriately
- Describe how to itemize and evaluate labor costs
- Compare the differences between cost-benefit analysis and cost-effectiveness analysis
