Summary:

Healthcare professionals must go beyond simply recognizing different cultural norms and practices in the workplace. They must integrate culturally appropriate interventions when working with culturally diverse clients and patients — and with coworkers. Cultural competency goes beyond traditional cultural eating patterns. It means healthcare professionals know such things as when to maintain or avoid eye contact, include or exclude family members during consultations, and formally or informally address people when speaking with them. A lack of cultural competency creates an invisible schism between providers and the people with whom they interact. This course discusses a number of mainstream cultural norms and explains how cultural competency functions as a vehicle for our health-related messages.

Objectives:

The goal of this continuing education program is to provide dietitians, dietary managers, fitness professionals, and health educators with information about developing cultural sensitivity and competency. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:

  • Explain the value and importance of integrating cultural competency in the education and training of healthcare professionals as well as developing individual and organizational cultural competency
  • Discuss the six progressive steps of the Cultural Competency Continuum
  • Explain why cultural values, more than income or race, can determine the quality of healthcare a patient receives

I thought this class was very interesting. I've taken a similar class with information about cultural competency. I thought it was very interesting and I enjoyed taking it. I would definitely recommend it to others that I work with to take this class.
