An eating disorder is a psychological issue manifested through food and eating. People with eating disorders have severe disturbances in eating behavior or an excessive preoccupation with body shape or weight. The fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders identifies some of the criteria for eating disorders. Given their multifactorial nature, treatment requires an experienced interdisciplinary team that includes registered dietitians. Depending on the severity of the illness, treatment may be provided in an inpatient or outpatient setting, with varying levels of intensity. Unfortunately, recovery rates are low. Dietitians need to know how to detect eating disorders and develop a treatment plan that works.

The goal of this continuing education program is to provide dietitians with information about the definitions, prevalence, and treatment of eating disorders. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Identify the five major types of eating disorders and their respective diagnostic criteria
  • Discuss the importance of a team approach to treatment of eating disorders and clarify the dietitian’s role within the medical team
  • Determine treatment priorities when planning the nutritional management of eating disorders

It provides good basic information on eating disorders and a simplified view of the RD's role in treatment. I was hoping it would include more specific strategies to use when working with this difficult patient population.
