Working with people who have an eating disorder is difficult. An eating disorder is a psychological problem manifested through food and eating, necessitating different approaches when working with clients. People with eating disorders have severe disturbances in eating behavior or excessive concern about body shape or weight. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th edition includes changes to some of the criteria for eating disorders as well as new criteria. Given the multifactorial nature of eating disorders, treatment requires an experienced interdisciplinary team that includes dietitians. Depending on the severity of the illness, treatment may be provided in an inpatient or outpatient setting, with varying levels of intensity. Unfortunately, recovery rates are low. Dietitians need to know how to diagnose eating disorders and develop a treatment plan that works.


The goal of this eating disorder continuing education program is to provide dietitians with information about the definitions, prevalence and treatment of eating disorders. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Understand the different types of eating disorders and their respective diagnostic criteria
  • Discuss the importance of a team approach to eating disorder treatment and clarify the dietitian’s role within the medical team
  • Identify treatment priorities when planning the nutritional management of eating disorders

Fairly entry level course. Would have liked more information concerning nutrition support such a PN or EN; when is it most appropriate.
