Summary:

Sinusitis is a common disorder characterized by inflammation of the lining of the paranasal sinuses. In most cases, inflammation of the nasal mucosa is also involved in rhinitis; the condition is referred to as rhinosinusitis. Acute sinusitis is defined as a viral or bacteriological infection of the sinuses that is less than four weeks in duration; sinusitis is also classified as subacute sinusitis, recurrent acute sinusitis, and chronic sinusitis. Antibiotic therapy for acute sinusitis requires clinical judgment, and antibiotics should not be routine for all patients because indiscriminate use can lead to bacterial resistance.

Objectives:

The goal of this continuing education program is to provide pharmacists and radiologic technologists with knowledge about the clinical aspects of managing patients with acute sinusitis. After studying the material presented here, you will be able to:
  • Describe the nonpharmacologic and pharmacologic treatment modalities for acute sinusitis
  • Explain the antibiotic treatment selection criteria for bacterial sinusitis
  • Describe the role of adjunctive treatments in the management of acute sinusitis
