Summary:

Chronic ulcers have significant effects on patients’ physical and mental health, finances, and overall quality of life. The successful healing of a lower extremity ulcer requires thorough assessment to identify the correct etiology and determine the proper treatment regimen. Current research and clinical guidelines on venous and arterial ulcers are reviewed in this course. Complete healing of these chronic wounds is best achieved through an interprofessional approach.

Objectives:

The goal of this educational program is to provide nurses and radiology professionals with the knowledge and skills to differentiate accurately the causes of vascular lower extremity ulcers and understand evidence-based diagnostic and treatment goals for managing arterial- and venous-related ulcers. After taking this course, you should be able to:
  • Describe the etiology and pathophysiology of arterial and venous ulcers.
  • Identify distinguishing clinical features for identification of arterial and venous ulcers.
  • Discuss the major diagnostic and treatment objectives for arterial and venous ulcers.
  • Distinguish the synergy and improved patient outcomes resulting from interprofessional teamwork and team-based care in the management of vascular wounds.

I found the course to be quite informative. I did not have a lot of knowledge prior to this course, and I will look at possible getting some further training in our role as radiological technologists.
